This alehouse was built by Joshua Shepley who signed his first alehouse recognizance in 1818. The same year an Act was passed to build the Sheffield to Glossop Turnpike Road over the Snake. He obtained a 96year lease in 1824 at 18 guineas per year, the pub was built with stables (now demolished) and a blacksmiths shop, no doubt to hold a change of horses ready for the climb up the Snake as well as for his own use.

In the 1841 Census he was described as a farmer aged 60 with a daughter Caroline and three farm servants. Caroline married Joseph Hampson who took over as licensee in 1847 a year before Joshua's death. In the 1851 Census Joseph was described as an innkeeper and farmer of 137 acres of land partly in cultivation, he employed one labourer and two servants.

Joseph remained licensee until 1873 and owner until 1874 when the licensee Thomas Bullock bought it selling it six months later to George Winterbottom the next licensee. He remained owner until 1888 when he sold it to Gartside's Brewery who took out a new 999 year lease in 1919.

Along with other Gartside's pubs it became a Gartside's & Bent's pub then Bents Gartsides and later a Bass pub. In 1970 the old clubroom to the rear was demolished when part of the roof fell in. Seven years later the interior was opened up from the three small rooms to form a large room with a central bar although this has now been put along the back wall, there is also a separate pool room or tap room.

In December 1993 following the Monopolies and Mergers Report the pub was sold to Mercury Taverns Pic. of Tamworth.
