Andrew is High Peak born and bred. He was born in 1962 in Buxton, and has lived in the High Peak all his life. He lives in Chapel-en-le-Frith in the heart of the constituency.

He and his wife Jayne both went to Long Lane school in Chapel and they have been married for 25 years. He has worked in industry for most of his life supplying engineering equipment to companies across the High Peak and North West area.

He is a keen follower of most sports, particularly cricket and football, and has been a follower of Buxton F.C. since he was a boy - preferring the local aspect of non league football over the glitzy image of the Premiership.

Andrew has been active in politics for many years. He was first elected to High Peak Borough Council in 1999 taking an active interest in many areas of the Council's responsibilities.

When the control of the Council changed in 2003, Andrew became the Chairman of the Social Inclusion & Community Select Committee. He was also the Chairman of the Development Plan Select Committee and sat on many sub committees looking at specific areas such as youth provision and housing in the High Peak.

In May 2010 Andrew was elected as the Member of Parliament for High Peak by a majority of 4,677. Since being elected he has consistently put the High Peak first, and has campaigned hard on local issues important to residents, such as the Mottram/Tintwistle Bypass, East Midlands Ambulance Service, and rural broadband.
