These lovely cottages are under threat similarly to Water Street cottages because they are built without foundations and rely on the meadow mill pond water level to keep them safe. unfortunately Firth Rixon wants to drain and build houses on the site.
I beleive they deliberately planted forest fire trees on the banks several years ago hoping that the roots would destroy the clay bottom sealing of the pond so they would have the excuse to drain it.
The mill pond that had a waterwheel opposite the cottages is a haven for wild life, with natural brown trout in it. Water birds use the island for safe nesting sites in the breeding season.
The track to the cottages is similar to how the streets in Old Glossop were surfaced before they were tarmacked, very few were even cobbled stoned.
